Ok, the saga continues . . .
I decided to do a little research AFTER buying the phone. A little out of order yes, but you will be interested in what I found. Thank you Wikipedia. I outlined in bold the parts I thought were most interesting:
The Motorola FONE F3 (frequently known as the MOTOFONE) is a candybar style mobile phone from Motorola, based on the SCPL design platform. The Motofone is available in two telephone formats, the F3, which is a GSM phone and was released on 28 November 2006, and the CDMA F3c, which was to be available Q4 2006.
Unlike most phones, the MOTOFONE F3 is designed to appeal to the low-end market and developing countries, making it less functional, but also less expensive than most phones. Motorola made it appealing to developing markets by using only simple symbols and using speech to identify tasks in the menu, helping those who can't read.
Although Motorola is marketing the MOTOFONE as the 'phone for everyone', the company has thus far refused to offer it in the United States and Canadian markets, despite announcing the product there in July 2006. (This would explain the Spanish instruction manual).

So I made the decision this morning to stick with the phone as long as I possibly could. You know, try my hand at patience and what not. Maybe it will teach me to not rely on the conveniences of modern technology, after all it is "less functional". By about 10:30 tonight that was all out the window, this phone is driving me crazy! My friend Laura affectionatley called it Strongbad's phone (reference to "Homestar Runner") and I couldn't agree with her more. I'm already quitting on my mission of patience with this thing. My new phone, ordered from T-Mobile through an upgrade, unfortunatley extending my contract - boo - is on it's way. Meanwhile, if anyone is traveling internationally and needs an unlocked phone, I'm your girl.

Oh, Trisha. Sam and I died laughing when we saw your phone. It is EVERYWHERE in Kenya. In fact our roommate, Andrew, had the exact same one. Good luck with the new phone!
